Three Bad Wolves ride again

Embracing the new and old school

I haven’t posted in a few weeks but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy. In fact, as I write this, a new Three Bad Wolves single has been accepted by online stores and will be unleashed 16 June 2022.

Don laid down drums in a couple of takes, I laid down the guitar parts in a few takes (although I had to practice first to get my fingers out of acoustic and piano mode!) and I turned in what I think is one of my best vocal performances ever on a song. The bass take is from the original demo recordings we did when Ben Groovinity was still in South Africa. That’s the only original parts and I’m proud to say that we went from recording drums, guitar and vox in about a month. Mixing and mastering took about two weeks.

Here is a video of one of the guitar takes that ended up in (I think the left) channel. I did another complete take and panned it hard right.

I must confess that I wasn’t aiming for perfection and the SM57 used in the recording isn’t my preferred mic as its been used too much for snare drum recordings but I was trying to capture a live spirit in the song. Don had about 20 mins to lay down his drums so I gave myself only a few takes to nail the vox as well. The result is zero overdubs and a very short signal chain on the vocals. I think I only used my Presonus preamp.

But I was trying to see how fast we can execute and I’m very happy with the time frame. There’s another single project in the works and with this out of the way I will turn my attention to mixing and mastering the next song.

Almost time to take some new projects on again.
